Wisconsin Wineries

Welcome to our Wisconsin Wineries Page,

the Wisconsin climate is very difficult for wine grape production. Only about a dozen wineries have commercial operations in the state, with most making wines from other fruits in addition to grapes. Some Wisconsin wineries rely upon vineyards in other states for all or part of their grape sources. Wisconsin has one designated American Viticultural Area, the Lake Wisconsin AVA. As of 2007, according to lobbying group WineAmerica, only about 41 wineries were in operation in Wisconsin.

Algoma area

Algoma was founded in 1834, and located in Kewaunee County, Originally known as Ahnapee, the city was renamed Algoma in September 1879. At that time the commercial fishing fleet located in Algoma was the largest on Lake Michigan and commercial fishing is still a major tourist attraction today.

Bayfield area

Bayfield is a city in Bayfield County, It is a former county seat, lumbering town and commercial fishing community, which today is a tourist and resort destination. There are many restaurants, hotels, bed & breakfasts establishments, specialty shops, and marine services. Bayfield is considered the main gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, a world famous freshwater sailing, boating and kayaking destination on Lake Superior.

Cedarburg area

.The woolen mill closed in 1968, and sat vacant for several years, until an offer was made to buy the buildings.Jim Pape then bought the mill buildings on the creekside, opening a winery. Known as the Cedar Creek Settlement, the rest of the space was rented out to shops, studios and restaurants.This began the tourism boom in Cedarburg. As the city became a quaint and pleasant place to visit, more galleries and studios opened, as well as souvenir shops and other attractions. Business associations started weekend festivals, which attracted even more people to the picturesque town.

Fish Creek area

The first settlers were the Claflin family circa 1844, but the village was founder is considered to be entrepreneur Asa Thorp. Loggers and fishermen started settling in Fish Creek in 1853. By 1900, summer tourists were frequently visiting the village, and Fish Creek became a resort community. Fish Creek is also adjacent to Peninsula State Park, and its main entrance is in the village. It is not only one of the most beautiful parks in the country, but boasts a wonderful yellow brick lighthouse built in 1866. Eagle Bluff Lighthouse is fully restored, furnished with fine antiques, as it looked in the 19th Century, and is open daily for tours in the summer months.:

Prairie du Sac area

The village is located within the Town of Prairie du Sac, just north of Sauk City; together, Prairie du Sac and Sauk City are referred to as Sauk Prairie. Prairie du Sac was named because the Sauk Indians had a large settlement. Although the name of the village dates from the early days of French fur traders, Prairie du Sac was established in 1840, largely as a Yankee-English village, in contrast to its neighbor, Sauk City, which was settled largely by Germans.
