Washington Wineries

Welcome to our Washington Wineries Page,

Washington State has over 30,000 acres of planted vineyards. It is now the nation's second largest wine producer and is ranked among the world's top wine regions. The early history of the Washington wine industry can be traced to the introduction of Cinsault grapes by Italian immigrants to the Walla Walla region. In the 1950s and 1960s, the precursors of the state's biggest wineries (Chateau Ste Michelle and Columbia Winery) were founded.

Here is a sampling of the Washington Wineries listings to plan your road trips from:

Battle Ground

The city is ironically named for the absence of a battle. In 1855 many of the soldiers at nearby Fort Vancouver were away fighting an uprising by the Yakima Indian tribe. Nervous settlers organized a company of volunteers to guard the undermanned fort. Fearing that the friendly Klickitat Tribe on the Lewis River would join the uprising, the volunteers ordered them into the Vancouver Barracks near the fort.

Blaine

International border intrigue has always been a part of Blaine's ambience. Smuggling became an underground industry in 1919 with the passage of the Volstead Act banning liquor sale and use in the United States. Rum-running and border jumping thrived along Blaine's shared coastline with British Columbia, the area's largest whiskey still was located on nearby Texada Island. This continued until Prohibition was repealed in 1933 (coincidentally the US Congressional law which re-legalized alcohol is named the Blaine Act) British Columbia, lies 35 miles to the north, while Seattle is 110 miles south, the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range are 25 miles east putting the Mt. Baker wilderness and Mt. Baker Ski Area at your doorstep.

In 1905, a settlement across the Baker River came into being due to the building of the Washington Portland Cement Company and was named "Cement City". After the Superior Portland Cement Company plant was built in Baker in 1908, it was decided to merge the two towns. Kent

The Kent area was first permanently settled by westerners in the early 1860s, and originally called Titusville (There is still a 'Titusville Station' sign on Gowe St).During the 1880s the town discovered hops production as the major source of income. Due to an aphid invasion which affected hops crops in Europe hops from the Puget Sound area were commanding high prices. Hops were shipped from Titusville either by the river or via rail. Eventually the town was even re-named for Kent County in England.

Woodinville

Like other nearby towns, Woodinville began as a logging community, became a farming center in the early decades of the 20th century, and developed into a suburb of Seattle after World War II. The growth of Bothell in the early 1990s led to plans for it to annex Woodinville; the residents of Woodinville responded by voting for incorporation in 1992. Woodinville was officially incorporated on March 31, 1993.

Yakima

Yakima County was created in 1865. When bypassed by the Northern Pacific Railroad in December 1884, over 100 buildings were moved with rollers and horse teams to the nearby site of the depot. The new city was dubbed North Yakima and was officially incorporated and named the county seat on January 27, 1886. The name was changed to Yakima in 1918. Union Gap was the new name given to the original site of Yakima.

Zillah

Zillah was founded in 1891 following the completion of the Sunnyside Canal project, an irrigation scheme delivering water from the Yakima River to the arid lower Yakima Valley. The town was named for Miss Zillah Oakes, daughter of Thomas Fletcher Oakes, who as president of the Northern Pacific Railway had backed the building of the canal. Zillah was officially incorporated on January 5, 1911
