Saskatchewan - were time stands still
Welcome to our Saskatchewan Canada page,
Known is a prairie province, which has an area of 588,276.09 square kilometers (227,134.67 sq mi) and a population of 1,006,644 (according to 2008 estimates), mostly living in the southern half. Of these, 202,340 live in the province's largest city, Saskatoon, while 179,246 live in the provincial capital, Regina. Other major cities, in order of size, are Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Yorkton, Swift Current, and North Battleford. The province's name comes from the Saskatchewan River, whose name comes from its Cree designation: kisiskâciwani-sîpiy, meaning "swift flowing river". Bound on the west by Alberta, on the north by the Northwest Territories, on the east by Manitoba, and on the south by the U.S. states of Montana and North Dakota. The province has the distinction of being the only one with no borders corresponding to physical geographic features. It is also one of only two provinces that are land-locked, the other being Alberta.
Some points of interest are Regina’s intriguing Royal Canadian Mounted Police Museum, and the coulees and buttes of the Grasslands National Park. Saskatoon has an attractive riverside setting and boasts good restaurants, plus a complex devoted to the culture of the Northern Plains Indians. Further west, Battleford has a splendidly restored Mountie stockade, while to the north Batoche National Historic Park, occupying a fine location beside the South Saskatchewan River, commemorates the Métis rebellion of 1885. Not far away from Batoche, Prince Albert National Park marks the geographical centre of the province, where the aspen parkland of the south meets the boreal forests and lakes of the north. There are some wonderful walks and canoe routes here, even though the park's tourist village, Waskesiu Lake, is rather commercialized.
