Pennsylvania's moderate climate and rolling terrain provides some of the best growing conditions on the East Coast. With approximately 14,000 acres of grapes, Pennsylvania ranks 4th nationally in the amount of grapes grown (including juice grapes). The state also ranks 8th in the production of wine. More than 100 wineries are located in all parts of the state, including five designated AVAs. Here is a state wide sampling of area wineries to plan your road trips with. Altoona area A major railroad town, Altoona was founded by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1849 as the site for a shop complex. Altoona was incorporated as a borough on February 6, 1854, and as a city under legislation approved on April 3, 1867.
