Pennsylvania Wineries

Welcome to our Pennsylvania Wineries Page,

Steel and Coal built this country, with a little help of the railroad industry so what better way is their to learn an areas history then have a little wine along the way. Pennsylvania's moderate climate and rolling terrain provides some of the best growing conditions on the East Coast. With approximately 14,000 acres of grapes, Pennsylvania ranks 4th nationally in the amount of grapes grown (including juice grapes). The state also ranks 8th in the production of wine. More than 100 wineries are located in all parts of the state, including five designated AVAs.

Altoona area

A major railroad town, Altoona was founded by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1849 as the site for a shop complex. Altoona was incorporated as a borough on February 6, 1854, and as a city under legislation approved on April 3, 1867. The Horseshoe Curve, a famous curved section of track owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad, has become a tourist attraction and National Historic Landmark.

Avella area

Avella's early history included American frontiersmen, grist mills and refuge forts during the 1700's, when the area was part of the western frontier. It remains the site of a significant farming community.

Belleville area

known locally as both the Kish Valley and Big Valley, is an enclosed anticlinal valley in the Ridge-and-valley Appalachians of Central Pennsylvania, lying between Stone Mountain ridge to the north and Jacks Mountain ridge to the south. Many Amish and Mennonite people also live in the valley. Kishacoquillas Valley is home to the Nebraska Amish, one of the most conservative Amish groups.

Breinigsville area

Breinigsville was named for George Breinig, who settled on a 123-acre tract in the vicinity in 1789. Around 1855, the Allentown Railroad was graded through Breinigsville, but the tracks were never laid. In the 1860s, the Catasauqua and Fogelsville Railroad used the grade to build from Trexlertown, on its main line, into Breinigsville, as part of a branch to serve local iron ore mines. These mines had shut down by the end of World War I, and the rails through Breinigsville were removed in the 1940s.

Buckingham area

In December 1776, this was were Gen. George Washington and his troops prepared to cross the Delaware and storm Trenton, New Jersey on Christmas Day. The attack caught the Hessian army by surprise and would represent a turning point in the American War of Independence. The town of Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania and Washington Crossing Historic Park were named to commemorate the event.

Carbondale area

Carbondale is located approximately 15 miles due NE of the city of Scranton in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The land area that became Carbondale was developed by William and Maurice Wurts, the founders of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, during the rise of the anthracite coal mining industry in the early 1800s. Carbondale was the site of the first underground mine in the United States. It was also a major terminal of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad.

Centre Hall area

Centre Hall is a borough in Centre County, located in Penns Valley and is part of the State College, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Area. Centre Hall hosts the Centre County Grange Encampment and Fair, known to most as the "Grange Fair". The Fair attracts tens of thousands of people during its run, and takes place the last full Thursday to Thursday week in August annually. It is one of the few remaining tenting fairs in the United States, with nearly a thousand "army-style" tents laid in rows throughout the grounds.

Coatesville area

The town is home to the former Lukens Steel Company, which was bought by the former Bethlehem Steel Corporation which was bought by the former Ohio-based International Steel Group (ISG) in 2002 which was bought by Mittal Steel and then merged with Arcelor Steel to form the current ArcelorMittal company.

Douglassville area

Douglassville exists along U.S. Route 422. Developments include the Amity Gardens subdivision, the West Ridge subdivision, the Briarwood subdivision, and the High Meadow subdivision. Douglassville also includes The Woods Edge subdivision along U.S. Route 562. There are three parks for which Douglassville is known for, Lake Drive Park and Recreation Area on Lake Drive in the Amity Gardens Subdivision, Hill Road Park is located on hill road in the West Ridge subdivision and Monocacy Hill Preserve is an undeveloped park used for hiking and environmental education on Monocacy Hill, it is right outside of Douglassville.

Elverson area

Elverson's earliest settlers arrived in the late 18th century when the area was known as Springfield. Later dubbed Blue Rock it remained largely rural until the arrival of the Wilmington and Northern Railroad in 1870. By 1883, the town's population had more than doubled. The Borough of Elverson was officially incorporated on April 17, 1911 from land annexed from West Nantmeal Township and it remained the commercial center of northwestern Chester County through the first half of the 20th century.

Gibsonia area

Gibsonia, Pennsylvania is an unincorporated community in both Allegheny County and Butler County, approximately 16 miles north of the city of Pittsburgh. Named in honor of the Gibson family who settled the area and their original house is still standing that sits near a railroad line leading out and into the City of Pittsburgh.

Harrisburg area

Harrisburg is the capital of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg played a notable role in American history during the Westward Migration, the American Civil War, and the Industrial Revolution. During part of the 19th century, the building of the Pennsylvania Canal and later the Pennsylvania Railroad allowed Harrisburg to become one of the most industrialized cities in the Northeastern United States.

Kane area

Kane is in McKean County, about 94 miles east by south of Erie. It was founded in 1863 by Civil War general Thomas L. Kane. Kane is a rural community which is rich with outdoor entertainment due to its location near the Allegheny National Forest. Hunting and fishing are very popular forms of entertainment for some people. Other people enjoy visiting such scenic areas as the Kinzua Dam, and the recently destroyed Kinzua Bridge (this railroad bridge was destroyed by a tornado in 2003). In the long winters, people enjoy cross-country skiing, sled riding, winter hiking, and snowmobiling.

Kutztown area

The seeds of Kutztown were sown on June 16, 1755 when George (Coots) Kutz purchased 130 acres from Peter Wentz (who patented much of what is now known as Maxatawny Township on December 1, 1724). Kutz first laid out his plans for the town in 1779. The first lots in the new town of Cootstown (later named Kutztown) were purchased in 1785 by Adam Dietrich and Henry Schweier. The town was located on the Easton Road, a main road in colonial Pennsylvania, and was a lodging place for many travelers as it was a one-day ride from both Reading and Allentown.

New Hope area

New Hope is the oldest town in Solebury township. A grant of land from William Penn to Richard Heath in 1710 included the site of the borough. There were two tracts of 500 acres each, known as the Mill Tract and the Ferry Tract. The whole of the two tracts being 1,000 acres "to hold to him the said Richard Heath, his heirs, and assigns, forever under the yearly rent of one English silver shilling for every 100 acres as on and by the said patent set forth bearing date, the second day of eleventh month 1710, and recorded in Philadelphia in Patent Book A, Volume 4."

Newtown area

Newtown Township traces its roots back to William Penn, who purchased 5,000 acres from the Leni Lenape Indians in 1683. He named this land my "New Township", which gradually became Newtown Township. Newtown served as the County Seat of Bucks County from 1726 until 1813.

North East area

North East is a borough in Erie County, 14 miles northeast of Erie. Fruit growing was an early economic endeavor, and is still to this day, as this is a popular area for especially cherries and grapes. They hold an annual Cherry Festival in the summer and an annual Wine Country Harvest Festival in the fall.

Somerset area

Visit the Somerset County Courthouse, Guided tours are available of the historical Courthouse building. The Courthouse contains records dating from 1795 and was dedicated in 1906. Much of the interior is made from Georgian and Italian marble. The roof is terra cotta tile and the dome is sheathed in copper with a stained glass rotunda.

York area

York was founded in 1741 by settlers from the Philadelphia region, and named for the English city of the same name. It was incorporated as a borough on September 24, 1787, and as a city on January 11, 1887. During the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), York served as the temporary capital of the Continental Congress. The Articles of Confederation were drafted and adopted in York, though they would not be ratified until March of 1781.
