New York ranks third in grape production by volume after California and Washington. Over 80% of New York's grape area is Concord. The rest is almost split equal between Vitis vinifera and French hybrids. During the past thirty years, the increased planting of Vitis vinifera varietals has led to a dramatic increase in the quality of New York wines.

Bridgehampton area

Bridgehampton is in the Town of Southampton. Shortly after the founding of Southampton in 1640, settlers began to move east to the area known by the Shinnecock Indians as Sagaponack and Mecox. Dundee area

The community was known early by the name "Plainview." At first, the village did not thrive due to competition from another neighboring community, "Eddytown," but eventually prevailed over its rival. Around 1834, residents began to seek a new name for the village and, persuaded by a native of Scotland, named the village "Dundee." He then moved to Illinois and persuaded the natives of his new home to rename their community "Dundee".

Fairport area

Fairport acquired its name in the mid-nineteenth century from a traveler on the Erie Canal who was overheard at Mallett's Tavern referring to the village as a fair port. In an ironic twist, local legend has it that the same visitor vociferously complained the next morning that the Millstone Block Hotel had bed bugs and he stormed out of Fairport never to return. The name, however, stuck.

Fredonia area

The area which is now Fredonia was most likely first occupied by early Mound Builders, then the Eries (13th to 17th centuries), then the Iroquois and Senecas. In 1791, Robert Morris purchased the Fredonia land from Massachusetts and sold it to the Holland Land Company. Parcels were sold to pioneers around 1800, and the first settlers came around 1803 or 1804

Gardiner area

The first settlers were Huguenots from France. The Town of Gardiner was established in 1853 from parts of the Towns of New Paltz, Rochester, and Shawangunk. In 1925, a large fire destroyed a large part of Gardiner village.

Geneva area

The site was originally the Seneca Native American village of Kanadasaga. The village was abandoned following its destruction by the punitive Sullivan Expedition of 1779, but resettled by Europeans around 1793 as a town developed by the Pulteney Association. The "Village of Geneva" was incorporated in 1806, 1812, and 1871, formally separating it from the surrounding area of Geneva Town. Later the village became a city.

Himrod area

Himrod (formerly "Himrods Corners" and then "Himrods") -- A hamlet in the southeast part of the town of Milo at the junction of County Roads 1 and 36. Himrod is also a white table grape, released in 1952 by the New York Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York. It is seedless and known for ripening quickly and its sweet flavor.

Ithaca was nationally known for the Ithaca Gun Company, makers of highly-valued shotguns, Due to the microclimates created by the impact of the lakes, the region surrounding Ithaca (Finger Lakes American Viticultural Area) experiences a short but adequate growing season for winemaking.The first record of wine making in the Finger Lakes is in 1829, when William Warner Bostwick, an Episcopal minister in Hammondsport, planted Vitis labrusca shoots in his rectory garden.

Pine Bush area

Pine Bush is located in the Town of Crawford, in Orange County, The community was one of the four early nimeteenth century settlements in the town. It has previously been known as "Shawangunk," "Crawford," and "Bloomfield." Currently, there is another community called "Crawford," located to the northwest in bordering Orange County. At one point in the mid-1980s, UFO sightings along West Searsville Road was nearly a nightly event. All sounds like good wine to me.
