The hot and humid climate of Mississippi makes it very difficult to cultivate vitis vinifera or French hybrid grapes. The three wineries focus almost entirely on the Muscadine grape, a variety also used for non-alcoholic grape juices, jams, and jellies.

Gulfport area

On July 28, 1898, Gulfport was incorporated. In 1902, the harbor was completed, and the Port of Gulfport became a working seaport.The Port of Gulfport has flourished over the years and today accounts for millions of dollars in annual sales and tax revenue for the state of Mississippi.

Indianola area

Indianola was originally named Indian Bayou, for the stream on which it was built. Between 1882 and 1884, the town's name was changed from Indian Bayou to Eureka, then to Belengate, and finally Indianola. It is speculated that name was selected by the Board of Supervisors in memory of Indianola, Texas, which had been totally destroyed by a hurricane in 1875.

One of Mississippi's oldest cities, it was founded in 1716, predating the current capital city — Jackson — by more than a century. Located along the Mississippi River, Natchez is the southern terminus of the Natchez Trace Parkway. The city is famous in American history for its role in the development of the Old Southwest, particularly with respect to its location on the Mississippi River.
