Idaho Wineries

Welcome to our Idaho Wineries Page,

Idaho has a long history of wine production with the first vineyards in the Pacific Northwest being planted here in the 1860s. Like in other areas Prohibition in the United States virtually wiped out the Idaho wine industry in the early twentieth century only to have it resurrected again in the 1970s. Since the 1970s, Idaho wine has been known for its cool climate white varietals like Riesling (including Ice wine), Chenin blanc, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer. In recent years there have been an increased focus on red wine productions, notably Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

The majority of the state's wineries are located in the Snake River valley west of Boise. Ste Chapelle Winery, founded in 1976, was Idaho's first bonded commercial winery. Today it is the fifth largest winery in the Pacific Northwest, owning no vineyards of their own, but purchasing grapes from over two thirds of the vineyards planted land in the state. The University of Idaho runs an experimental vineyard and winery in the city of Parma which studies the potential of different varietals to grow in Idaho.

Glenns Ferry area

Glenns Ferry was one of the most famous river crossings on the Oregon Trail. Pioneers forded the Snake River at the Three Island Crossing until 1869, when Gustavus "Gus" Glenn constructed a ferry about two miles upstream, primarily to expedite freight but also for emigrants. His boat, which could hold two wagons, cut nearly twenty miles from the former route

Three Island Crossing State Park, opened in 1971, is home to The Oregon Trail History and Education Center, where visitors can learn about pioneer emigrants and Native American history. The Glenns Ferry community sponsors a crossing commemoration the second Saturday of each August. The townsite was platted in 1871, just downstream from the ferry site, and the first bridge across the Snake River was built here in 1908.

Moscow area

Miners and farmers began arriving in the northern Idaho area after the Civil War. The first permanent settlers came to the Moscow area in 1871. Due to the abundance of camas bulbs, a favorite fodder of pigs brought by the farmers, they informally named the vicinity Hog Heaven. When the first post office opened in 1872, the town was called Paradise Valley (Paradise Creek flows through town, westward to Pullman), but the name was changed to Moscow in 1875.

Twin Falls city was founded in 1904 . Excavations at Wilson Butte Cave near Twin Falls in 1959 revealed evidence of human activity, including arrowheads, that rank among the oldest dated artifacts in North America. Twin Falls became the center of national attention in September 1974 thanks to an attempt by Evel Knievel to jump the Snake River Canyon in a specially-modified rocket cycle.
