Georgia Wineries

Welcome to our Georgia Wineries Page,

Georgia was an important winegrowing region of the United States in the 19th century, and by 1900 ranked sixth in production among U.S. states. The wine industry in Georgia was destroyed by Prohibition in the United States. The state of Georgia first prohibited alcoholic beverages before many other states, in 1907. The modern wine industry of Georgia only began in the 1980s. Georgia is the national leader in the production of wine from the Muscadine grape.

Braselton was named after the Braselton family that has lived in the area for some time. The town was bought from the Braselton Families by a partnership between the Ameritech Pension fund and actress Kim Basinger in 1989 for $20 million. The Basinger-Braselton partnership hoped to establish Braselton as a tourist attraction with movie studios and a film festival. Basinger eventually sold her minor portion to the Ameritech Fund when she met financial difficulties. The town is under the ownership of developer Wayne Mason. It is the home of Chateau Elan Winery. It is also the headquarters of the American Junior Golf Association, IMSA, the Panoz Motor Sports Group, and the Road Atlanta race track.

Dahlonega area

Dahlonega, Georgia was the site of the first gold Rush in the USA. It was a boom town in the Georgia Gold Rush and became the site of a United States Mint branch mint between 1838 and 1861. The facility was then controlled by the Confederate Treasury Department and operations continued until June 1, 1861. Numerous gold mines were scattered around the area, a major reason for the forced relocation of the Cherokee nation to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears. The city's name since 1833 comes from the Cherokee-language word "Talonige" or "Dalonige", meaning "yellow money" or "gold." The city is just east of Auraria, and each city claims to be the authentic site of the first discovery of gold.
