Canadian Vacations made easy
Welcome to our Canadian Vacations Page, France ceded nearly all of its colonies in North America in 1763 after the Seven Years War. In 1867, with the union of three British North American colonies through Confederation, Canada was formed as a federal dominion of four provinces. This began an accretion of additional provinces and territories and a process of increasing autonomy from the United Kingdom, highlighted by the Statute of Westminster in 1931 and culminating in the Canada Act in 1982 which severed the vestiges of legal dependence on the British parliament. A federation now comprising ten provinces and three territories, Canada is a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. It is a bilingual and multicultural country, with both English and French as official languages at the federal level. Alberta is one of three provinces and territories (the others being New Brunswick and Yukon) to border only a single U.S. state. It is also one of two provinces that are land-locked (the other being Saskatchewan). The capital city of Alberta is Edmonton, located just south of the centre of the province. Calgary is a major distribution and transportation hub as well as being one of Canada's major commerce centers. Edmonton is the primary supply and service hub for Canada's oil sands and other northern resource industries. What may come as a surprise, however, is the region's sheer natural diversity: between the expected extremes of the mountainous, forested interior and the fjord-cut mountains of the coast lies a jigsaw of landscapes, including genteel farmland, ranching country, immense lakes and even a patch of genuine desert. British Columbia contains both Canada's wettest and its driest climates, and more species of flora and fauna than the rest of the country put together. The range of recreational possibilities is equally impressive: the country's biggest ski area, its warmest lakes and some of its best beaches are all here, not to mention hot springs and hiking, sailing and canoeing galore, as well as some of the best salmon fishing in the world. Manitoba's lakes cover approximately 14.5% of its surface area. Lake Winnipeg is the largest lake within the borders of southern Canada, and the east side has some of the last remote and intact watersheds left in the world. The large rivers that flow into the east side of Lake Winnipeg's basin are pristine, with no major developments along them. The most southern herd of woodland caribou in Canada is along the east side of Lake Winnipeg. Many uninhabited islands can be found along the eastern shore of this lake. There are thousands of lakes across the province. It's true that the forested upland that makes up the bulk of the province is a trifle repetitious, but the long river valleys that furrow the landscape compensate and the funnel-shaped Bay of Fundy, with its dramatic tides and delightful coastline, is outstanding. Equally, in Fredericton, the capital, the province has one of the regions most appealing towns, a laid-back easy sort of place which, besides offering the bonus of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, also possesses strings of fine old villas and a good-looking cathedral. Handsome scenery is within easy reach too - it's a short trip south to scenic Passamaquoddy Bay, an island-studded inlet of the Bay of Fundy that's home to the likeable resort of St Andrews. Ferries from Nova Scotia touch the southwest and the Avalon, but most visitors fly straight to St John's, the island's only significant town and the obvious place to start a visit, for its museums, its flourishing folk music scene and its easy access to the Witless Bay sea-bird reserve. Yet there are more delightful spots than this: tiny Trinity, on the Bonavista Peninsula north of the Avalon isthmus, is easily the most beguiling of the outports; the French-owned archipelago of St-Pierre et Miquelon is noted for its restaurants; Gros Morne National Park , in the west, features wondrous mountains and glacier-gouged lakes; and at the far end of the Northern Peninsula you'll find the scant but evocative remains of an eleventh-century Norse colony at L'Anse aux Meadows, the only such site in North America. Just three roads nibble at the edges of this vast area. Most visitors are here to fish or canoe, to hunt or watch wildlife, or to experience the Inuit aboriginal cultures and ethereal landscapes. More for convenience than any political or geographical reasons, from 1999 a new two-way division has applied, the eastern portion of the NWT having been renamed Nunavut, a separate entity administered by and on behalf of the region's aboriginal peoples. One effect has been the renaming of most settlements with Inuit names, though in many cases the old English-language names appear in much literature. Toronto is Canada's biggest city, a financial and industrial behemoth that boasts a hatful of sights - the pick of which are its art galleries - a great restaurant scene and a vibrant nightlife. To the east and west of the city, along the north shore of Lake Ontario is the so-called "Golden Horseshoe" - named for its economic clout rather than its looks and comprising sprawling suburbs and ugly industrial townships. But the steel city of Hamilton, at the western end of the lake, does have one or two interesting historic sights and is also near Canada's premier tourist spot, Niagara Falls - best visited on a day-trip from Toronto or from colonial Niagara-on-the-Lake. PEI amusement, theme & water parks here are your accommodation options: Prince Edward Island Accommodations Quebec Canadian Vacations The Gallic ancestry of most Québécois is clear in their attitude towards hedonistic pleasures - they eat and drink in a style that combines the simplicity of the first settlers with the rich tastes of the French. Nowhere is this more evident than in the island metropolis of Montréal, premier port of the province and home to a third of all Québécois. Montréal's skyscrapers and nightlife bear witness to the economic resurgence of French-speaking Canada, whereas in Québec City the attraction lies more in the ancient streets and architecture. Beyond these centres, the Gaspé Peninsula, poking into the Gulf of St Lawrence, is the most appealing area with its inspiring mountain scenery and rocky coastline. Part of the peninsula, protected as parkland, provides sanctuary for a variety of wildlife, from moose to herons. Here, a score of once-remote fishing villages have become mini-resorts, the most attractive of which is Percé . Some 200 miles southeast of the peninsula, in the Gulf of St Lawrence, the Îlesde la Madeleine’s windswept archipelagos and beach-trimmed islands are Québec's version of the Caribbean. In the popular imagination, the north figures as a perpetually frozen wasteland blasted by ferocious gloomy winters, inhabited - if at all - by hardened characters beyond the reach of civilization. In truth, it's a region where months of summer sunshine offer almost limitless opportunities for outdoor activities and an incredible profusion of flora and fauna; a country within a country, the character of whose settlements has often been forged by the mingling of white settlers and aboriginal peoples.
